Striking Appearance

The beautifully simple, solid black design gives this cooktop an upscale stylish look. Any symbols or print that are etched on its surface are small and light - very discreet. It is strikingly attractive. However, as a result, the knobs aren’t so user friendly. The control knob is faintly notched at its front but is otherwise the same shape as its back so you can’t readily tell which end is the indicator. I wished it had a dab of white paint in the notch to aid in that determination or that it was slightly pointed so you could more easily tell. Also, it is rather curvy and sleek which makes for a grip that doesn’t feel very confident or secure. However, that shape does allow them to be more easily cleaned.

A variety of burner sizes lets you select from 6”, 8” or 10” in order to better match your pan or pot. One “Dual” burner up front allows you to choose between either 6” or 10” depending on how you turn its dial. My wife wishes that the medium 8” burner, which is in back, was up front instead of the small 6” one since you already have a 6” available within the dual burner. Once turned on, the burners reach their setting fairly rapidly.

There are two separate red indicator lights. One lights up to signal when one or more burners are turned on. And, there is another one next to it that will light up to show that the surface is hot, even after all the burners are turned off.

Overall, what stands out about this cooktop is its strikingly beautiful and simple, total black appearance while its performance and features are rather typical of its price range.

This Unit Has Issues

I purchased this unit on (8/3/18).
When using the dual size (6/10 in) element and choosing the smaller 6 in size, the most outer ring of the 10 in element glows red and is hot. This is a safety/nuisance issue and a poor design. That is why I give it 3 stars and Not Recommended.

The unit is to have form tape that fits around the bottom edge of the cooktop. The single roll of tape I received measured 30 inches. I need at least 100 in. of tape for all edges. I contacted Whirlpool and they agreed to send me the extra tape.

The cooktop scratches very easy. I used a small pan on the 6 in burner and hardly moved it. When lifting the pan, small scratches were evident. My old Kitchen Aid cooktop never did this with far more movement of utensils on its cooktop surface.

The layout of the controls is problematic. First, all knobs are black sitting on a black background. The knobs have a slight depression on one end to tell you if you are looking at the top or bottom of the knob, but being black you have difficulty seeing it.

The Low and High heat indicator marks on the cooktop are so small, as to be ineffective in identifying where and what they are. Without a strong light on the black knobs, you can’t tell what setting you are on.

So, for future use, you have to guess (or remember) what heat position setting the knobs are set for. And then to make that issue worse, you need to know all knobs do not work the same. When you turn the top three knobs clockwise, the first heat indicator is High. When you turn the bottom (dual size) knob clockwise, the first heat indicator is Low. Can be confusing.

I bot this a month ago and it broke. After finally getting thru to Whirlpool they sent a technician to repair it but he couldn't figure out what part was needed. Still waiting. All in all it is unsafely designed. There is just one "burner is hot" light leaving you to guess which one or more it is.

I needed a new cooktop and am pleased with the purchase. It's relatively easy to clean but I needed to learn about the differences between a glass cooktop and a traditional range with removable burners. My only issue is the large burner on the back will not boil a large pot of water. It comes up to temperature but will not get to a roiling boil.
